Electricity tariffs for expats on the Costa del Sol
Foreigners from all over the world live on the Costa del Sol, and many still pay for electricity on whatever tariff the house had when they bought it. I'll tell you if there's a better one for you.
Where I help in Costa del Sol
I help expats in Málaga city, Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar, Nerja, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona, Casares and Manilva, and in inland villages such as Alhaurín el Grande, Coín or Frigiliana.
What drives electricity bills in Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol is full of apartments used a few months a year or let out seasonally. With such irregular usage, the fixed part of the bill weighs heavily, and a fixed-price tariff helps you know in advance what you'll pay. In villas with a pool, the pool pump and air conditioning are usually the biggest consumers.
Who brings electricity to your home in Costa del Sol
On the Costa del Sol the grid almost always belongs to e-distribución (Endesa group). Your contract with the supplier that bills you is separate: you can switch without touching the installation or the meter.
Why the price per kWh isn't enough
Fixed-price tariffs cost the same everywhere in mainland Spain. What changes from one home to another is your contracted power, the times you use electricity and whether the house is empty part of the year. That's why I don't compare against a "typical" household: I calculate with the kWh per period and the days on your own bill, with all taxes, and tell you what you'd pay per month with each tariff.
Questions from expats in Costa del Sol
I let my apartment to tourists. Can I use the comparison?
Yes, as long as the electricity contract is a household one (2.0TD, up to 15 kW), which is normal for holiday apartments. I calculate with your real consumption, so it doesn't matter whether you or your guests use it.
Do the tariffs you compare have a minimum contract period?
For each tariff I show its conditions exactly as the supplier publishes them on its official website. If one has a minimum period or makes you take an extra service, I'll tell you clearly before you decide.
Do I need to be in Spain to switch supplier?
No. The switch is done remotely: I need your NIE, NIF or passport, an email address, a phone number and a bill showing your CUPS. There's no work at the house, your power isn't cut off and you don't have to call your current supplier: the cancellation happens automatically.
