Electricity for expats

Electricity tariffs for expats in Valencia

Valencia is one of the Spanish cities with the most foreign residents, and one of the questions I hear most is whether they're paying too much for electricity. I'll tell you, with your bill in hand.

Where I help in Valencia

I help expats in Valencia city (Ruzafa, El Carmen, Benimaclet, La Malvarrosa…) and along the province's coast: Port Saplaya, Puçol, Sagunto, El Saler, Cullera, Gandía and Oliva. Inland too, as long as your home is on the grid with a household contract.

What drives electricity bills in Valencia

Many expats in Valencia live in flats with low contracted power and an electric water heater. If you can run the water heater, washing machine or dishwasher at night or at weekends, a three-period tariff is often cheaper than a flat-rate one. Humid summers send air conditioning use soaring: that's when choosing well makes the biggest difference.

Who brings electricity to your home in Valencia

In most of the province of Valencia the grid belongs to i-DE (Iberdrola group). Switching supplier doesn't change the grid or the meter: if there's a fault, you still call the distributor, just as you do now.

Why the price per kWh isn't enough

Fixed-price tariffs cost the same everywhere in mainland Spain. What changes from one home to another is your contracted power, the times you use electricity and whether the house is empty part of the year. That's why I don't compare against a "typical" household: I calculate with the kWh per period and the days on your own bill, with all taxes, and tell you what you'd pay per month with each tariff.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from expats in Valencia

Is a time-of-use tariff worth it for me?

It depends on when you use electricity. Off-peak runs from midnight to 8 am on weekdays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. Your bill shows how many kWh you use in each period, and from that I work out whether it pays off.

I rent my home. Can I switch electricity supplier?

If the electricity contract is in your name, yes, and you don't need the landlord's permission. If it's in the landlord's name, they have to switch it, or the contract holder has to be changed first. I'll tell you which applies when I see your bill.

Do I need to be in Spain to switch supplier?

No. The switch is done remotely: I need your NIE, NIF or passport, an email address, a phone number and a bill showing your CUPS. There's no work at the house, your power isn't cut off and you don't have to call your current supplier: the cancellation happens automatically.
